Can trees talk? Yes—but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars（毛虫） changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer (扫盲志愿者). The training I received, though excellent, didn't tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people’s lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three children. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she couldn't read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label（标签，商标）, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie’s self-confidence. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

When I was 6 years old, my mom bought me a goldfish whose name was King. Some weeks after King arrived we decided to give him some friends, so I ended up with an aquarium(鱼缸) with about 15 fish. My mother is creative when it comes to deceiving. To prevent me from catching a cold after taking a shower, she always told me, “If you don’t dry yourself properly after showering, your body hair is going to grow out, making you look like a furry bear.” And her reason was simple---you water plants and they grow --- similarly, you water your body and if you don’t dry, your hair grows.
When I was little, my dad told me that pressing the button(按钮) on the handbrake(手刹) would make the car fly and that he only used it in an emergency as it was extremely dangerous. Back then I knew he was probably cheating me. But now, when I am stuck in a terrible traffic jam, I gently touch the button and tell myself it’s always there for me in case I need to use it as a very last thing to depend on.

How Can I Fight Laziness?
Lazy people find it hard to fight laziness. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
